rs are a brutish race known for being unnecessarily violent and filthy creatures. It is in their nature to be this way as their origins extend back to some of the oldest bloodlines in existence. The first of these are the Jann, a race created by extinct gods from a long forgotten age. Extinction might seem the wrong word to use as there were survivors, but they were no longer what they had been... they had become the Jinn.

The second bloodline would begin their own separate evolution from a breed of Gŏblin that slowly transformed itself over countless aeons. Only when the two bloodlines became merged would the first direct ancestors of the r come into being and begin their divergent paths from one ... into many. Ever-present on an rs mind is survival and everything is viewed as a potential threat as their trust is difficult to gain except by like-minded entities often of a darker, more sinister nature.

There are three recognized branches of the r clade which can be broken down further by species, subspecies, races, and hybrids. Their willingness to mix blood with outcasts and rogues from other species, and their adaptability to their environment, would result in there being few racial traits they all share in common. What traits they do share tend to be more internal than external and anyone examining their bones who know what to look for will know their lineage is that of an r.

rs have a reptilian or saurian appearance, especially where their skin may be concerned. Their skin is a blending of attributes appearing mammalian being smooth, possessing hair and regulating body temperatures. They also possess amphibious traits such as the ability to breathe and absorb moisture through their skin as a survival trait. But, their skin can also have reptilian or avian traits such as scales, scutes, spikes of even feathers in rare cases.

Features like ears and teeth can vary greatly from one race of r to another just as body type itself can. The telltale traits that link all rs are in their bones. Prominent brows, increased bone mass, reinforced ribs, wider sternum, thicker spines and various bumps which inflict greater damage on enemies in unarmed combat. One particular trait of all rs is an oddly shaped manubrium, a part of the sternum which has the shape of a small animal, or serpents, skull.

The more powerful among them have the general body shape of the Jann while those with a weaker build tend to look more like Gŏblins. As with most species, rs can recognize their own on sight but they can also recognize one another by scent if only a trace of r blood exists in another they might not clearly recognize with their vision alone. However, this blend of features can be broken down into four branches forming the r clade established around the four prime elements.

The oldest of these are the Grnska (aka the Greenskins) who are descended more directly from the Jann and represent the element of earth. Most rs fall into the Grnska branch which evolved to encompass additional earth tones like brown and beige. Grnska are typically known for distinctive olive green and black skin that comes in different shades of green both lighter and darker. They are the most adaptable of the sub-species groups and more easily evolve for survival in new environments.

The Rauta (aka Redskins) are descended from an r race called the Kark known for their various shades of red fleshtone and represent the element of fire. Many among the beige and brown skinned Grnska gravitate to intermarry with Rauta because it improves their opportunities to rise in status due to the much larger number of greenskins. Rauta are the most lethal and possess the best survival skills. While most have red skin, others might be mistaken as Grnska if not for forearms, freckles or other markings.

The third branch of the rish clade are the Blēwaz (aka Blueskins) who are descended from a race of r called the Xoc who represent the element of water and tend to have flesh-tones of blue, gray and black. Blēwaz are viewed as the most evolved among the rs, the most physically advanced and among the most powerful. But where Blēwaz are physically more advanced and stronger, they lack the same survival skills as the other sub-species and either serve or are served by others in codependent relationships for mutual gain.

Lastly are the Zār (or Yellowskins / Paleskins) who descend from a race of r called the Helva and represent the wind element. Zār are among the rarest of the r clade often being albinos and are known for their speed in battle.

Half-rs like these are accepted as rs because rs do not discriminate based on ideals of racial purity because they see themselves as an impure species. Most Half-rs appear dramatically different than other rs but most still have rish racial traits. The Shurn, however, are considered rs of a different order. They are Half-rs descended from Beastmen who mixed their bloodlines with rs at some point in their evolutionary past.

Even with the Shurn, the bones tell their racial origins and they possess some of the abilities of the rs such as their ability to stop bleeding when injured. The value of Half-rs is that they replenish the ancient r bloodlines and they have even revived dying r races beinging them back stronger than before. Those possessing the brighter, lighter shades of green often have brown to beige or pink hues reflecting a stronger descent from humans.

rs revel in violence and destruction often proving combative even with those closest to them. If they are cruel, it's just the natural order of things to an r and if they treat others with hostility, it's no different than they treat one another. Any sense of love often proves little more than co-dependency or appreciation because companionship improves their chances of survival. When they are gathered, such as in the cause of war, rs fight as one peoples rather than against one another. It is for their mutual survival that rs build their communities prefering a simpler, tribal existence or living amidst the ruins of other civilizations.

While they typically live in tribal or clan based communities, rs prefer isolationism and when outside forces impact or influence them otherwise, they can be at their most fierce. Male rs are often cast out of families to find their own fate while females remain to defend the heartland of their communities. Male rs far outnumber females further explaining their willingness to intermarry with other races and species where female rs prefer male rs as mates. Thus, rs tend to be a matriarchal society where the law, caregiving and resource management are concerned. Beyond these areas, rs are patriarchal especially in areas of war and religion.

Theirs is a culture more akin to that of feudalism in Medieval Europe as rs are not known for being sophisticated or creative. Those who gain leadership roles tend to be the most skilled and capable among them. These rs form the elite and differ from the majority of their fellow rs both intellectually and culturally. They are better educated, more sophisticated and form strong familial bonds based on a class system rather than necessarily being bound by blood relationships. While rs are not known for taking responsibility for what they do (or fail to do), this elite class do possess a sense of honor where they are willing to accept accountability for their actions.

rs have a reputation as scavengers because they exploit what others abandon or do not want. They do not recognize claims of ownership based on ethics... not even the sentimentality afforded to the dead the living might afford to them have meaning. Professional scavengers can even earn a position of respect and wealth as tradesmen; and money lenders. rs will try their hands at manual labor (such as farming) and can become tradesmen and merchants. But, where manual labor is imposed upon them, it is despised as a punishment because it offends their sense of personal liberty and they will resist such measures against them.

Everything is a potential threat to an r which is ironic considering their trust for one another when the greatest threat to an r... is another r! While not known for intellect or skills beyond scavenging and fighting, it often proves a mistake to underestimate an r because they can be both cunning and devious. rs are more willing to serve the cause of evil and darkness because those who live "in the light" often find the ways of rs too abhorrent to be accepting where darker minds have common objectives. For those who learn how to manipulate the rs customs and ways, there can be many rewards as rs rarely care for material gain.

While it might be said that r society is dysfunctional, it is more true to say they are self-absorbed and unsophisticated. In psychological terms, it might be said that rs suffer from varying degrees of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and can be quite creative in repurposing things. rs can develop finer tastes when living among a subject people or by intermarrying with different peoples. As long as these other peoples serve them, rs will often adapt and "improve" themselves. Their survival instincts allow them to adopt the ways of those they accept or who accept them. In this manner, any whose ways are similar to rs and who want to join with them will be accepted and assimilated. If anything, an r is impressed that any creature would want to be an r or join with them.

While not religious by nature, rs are known for ancestor worship and granting respect to gods as beings more powerful than themselves. rs see themselves as serpents within the World Tree working their way through the branches like creeping vines. They would always identify themselves with creatures like the monstrous Nhggr because they reflect an rs own dark inner nature. They would also embrace those things which were deadly and feared by others including the places where they chose to live. It isn't that rs are lazy, it's that they value their time and live simple lives. Unless it needs to be done and they actually want to do it, they won't.

Most rs prefer to live in caves and caverns where they find the cool, damp atmosphere more to their liking. Swamplands, deserts and rocky terrains are also favored as rs feel more secure living where it's too dangerous or where there's little anyone else would want. rs exploit abandoned ruins and, being mercenary in nature, often settle lands they have conquered on behalf of others. Many will defile and destroy what they see as beautiful for the same reasons others would eliminate what they find to be ugly. It has also been reasoned that rs become a reflection of their environment and the fear and disgust others feel towards them because of it.

Where others see ugliness and imperfection, rs accept such things for what they are and adapt to their surroundings. As such, rs seem slovenly by nature often preferring to live in filth and squalor possibly as a side effect of being depressed or simply not caring. They are often viewed as mongrels for their "undisciplined" mating habits. Such things rarely matter to an r as if an r resents anything, it's how others think themselves better than an r just for being born different. r females vary in how they give birth as some produce leathery eggs which they bury to complete their birth cycle within the soil. Others give live birth and care for their offspring only until they are old enough to provide for their own basic needs. At this point, r offspring are raised in a communal setting by the entire tribe or clan so that an rs loyalty is to the community in which they live rather than a family bloodline alone.

    Powers & Abilities

All rs are hardy survivors whose bodies are highly adaptive. Injuries that would kill most living creatures, they can survive. rs excrete an enzyme-like slime which stops bleeding so that it is rare that they bleed out. Even injuries to their brains can be healed with time as other than some memory loss, their brains are highly adaptive. rs often have two hearts leaving them weak for a time if one is injured but they can survive such injuries unless both hearts are affected. Even if a limb is severed, the slime their bodies excrete can cement it back in place with only a resulting weakness in the limb. This ability also allows for transplants from one r to another and if an r is beheaded, that does not mean they are dead. Some breeds can survive minutes to hours after a beheading providing time for others to place the head back on the neck of their bodies to begin the healing process.

rs can eat almost anything which includes things that are toxic or poisonous to most others. An rs metabolism is extremely strong and what doesn't kill them literally does make them stronger because what harms them once may not harm them again. Another effect of their metabolism is that an rs body can shut down and enter a hibernating state mimicking death. This trait allows them to survive things that might have killed them and, to ensure they are dead, an enemy must dismember the body or destroy it such as with an all consuming fire. And yet, even death for an r may not be permanent. Sorcery exists which can reanimate the slime their bodies create and regenerate their flesh within the earth. This does not mean the soul of the original r is resurrected with its body as this is a newborn being possessing limited knowledge but capable of learning quickly.

How they breed can also differ from race to race as most females give birth within nine months in the way human women do. Others lay leathery eggs which hatch outside the mothers bodies. In other rare cases, the child must be cut or torn from the mother whose healing ability protects the mother from death unless the damage is too great. Another survival trait of rs is that weaker males and stronger females can change their gender in the absense of an opposite gender to mate with. This is not unusual considering their amphibian and reptilian ancestry but it is not a trait of all the r races. All rs choose to remain the gender of their birth unless forced to make this change. Homosexuality is extremely rare among them except where they are born hermaphrodites and they develop an orientation towards the same gender they represent themselves as.

Another trait related to their reproductive abilities is that rs can produce throwbacks to earlier races from their ancestral past. They also possess the ability to bring these traits out within themselves for survival. While rare, this is part of what makes rs so adaptive as past racial traits that were adapted to different environments can resurface when they find themselves living under similar circumstances. rs can also be born with certain abilities to manipulate the elements of earth, water and fire. Most with such abilities have only the most basic powers while those with greater abilities must train to control them. Likewise, some rs are predisposed towards wielding magick due to intermarriage with other species like .

rs come in many forms but tend to have certain vulnerabilities in common. They are creatures of flesh and blood even where this might come about more by supernatural means. They can be weakened by disease, but are rarely killed by it as their immune systems will kick in and help them recover. rs can be poisoned but it must be a fast acting poison to kill as otherwise their bodies will enter hibernation to preserve them, heal them or vomit it from their system. Depending on the species and where their organs are located, they can be slain like any other living thing. While rs possess a highly advanced healing system, they can be killed like any other living thing... it's just more difficult. Bludgeoning weapons are among the most effective against rs as crushed or shattered body parts do not heal unless cut apart to restore by healers. Weapons that involve heat, such as sun swords, can kill them by searing the flesh closed before healing can begin.

    Genesis of the r

    The Al'ux

From their earliest beginnings, there were bonds between rs and Fries. The earliest known beginnings of the r can be traced to a creature called the Al'ux. It came into being as an offshoot of Gŏblins who had developed a taste for a small, winged Sprite called the Ʋǐla. The Ʋǐla were formed from the lingering remains of spirit energy after a sapient being dies and were often caught on the end of a Gŏblins long sticky tongue. The energy of these Sprites would be passed through the Gŏblins into their spawn and created changes in the resulting polliwogs. Extremely toxic and cannibalistic, their young developed a hierarchy where they claimed rank through strength and survival. When they metamorphosed into their adult form, they formed a structured tribal society and the earliest racial traits of the r could be seen in them. Where Gŏblins developed a taste for Ʋǐla, Al'ux developed a taste for Gŏblins and became Gŏblin Hunters in an ironic twist of fate.

The Al'ux are the alpha to the rs omega. Without them to set the process of evolution in motion, rs would not exist as a species even should rs reject the idea that they are Gŏblin-spawn. Although it might be conjectured that they were still part of the Goblin clade, it was clear that they were evolving into something new. Al'ux would survive where many other races descended from them either became extinct or were absorbed into other races. Two of the surviving races were the Chaneque and Gremlins, creatures representing wind and fire elements where the Al'ux themselves represented the element of earth. Al'ux have green and black skin, broad pointed ears, flat noses, razored claws, spike-like teeth, a long sticky tongue and a prehensile barbed tail. Al'ux possess little sapient intellect but are attracted to certain types of rs who treat them like trained monkeys and pets.
    Sƴn Sălrosa

Knowledge of the rs past was elusive because it seemed as if they had always existed and evidence of this was always being found. The mystery of their origins were long forgotten to the mists of time until the arrival of a sorceress called Sƴndăra of Sălrosa. Sƴn Sălrosa was a half-blooded Mal'āk granting her the gifts she would use to learn what was demanded of her. Her stock and trade was necromancy and especially the practice of communicating with the dead to gain knowledge. During a war with the rish Hŋs, she would be called upon to learn their secrets in hopes of finding a way to defeat them. Presented with the body of a slain r leader, she would surround herself with others who were less skilled in these arts but who were necessary to the task set before her. By placing his head upon a liṅga stone, she opened a doorway into the Spirit World where his soul resided... only it wasn't his soul she was searching for.

Sƴn would discover the r leaders spirit too powerful and would be forced to dig deeper in search of knowledge that might be weaponized against the Hŋs. Entering the Spirit World had been dangerous enough, but now she would be venturing into the Realms of Death. She was in search of the Lifestream of the r as it was understood that within all creatures, there survived an energy which linked Alpha and Omega. This required a long and difficult trek because it meant a journey through time to the earliest beginnings of the rish species. This would also require her to ingest parts of the r leader's body as eating his liver gave her the ability to renew herself, eating his reproductive organs increased her spiritual vitality and eating his heart provided access to spirit energies she sought after. Entering in and out of a transcendental state of spiritual awareness, Sƴn would leave her body for hours to days at a time and was unaware that her mission was becoming an obsession.
    An End To A Beginning

She was warned that there were physical changes taking place within her and when dangerous spirits escaped because of her, she was ordered to cease her efforts. When Sƴn refused, she would be banished from her people awakening battered and bloodied with no sense of time or memories of what had happened. After one such experience, she found herself in the dead of Winter when it had been the Spring season last she could remember. Violent visions would torment her mind and she would return to her people finding them in disarray. Many of their leaders had been slain after further defeats over two years of renewed warfare. They cared nothing for what she was doing so that she gathered those willing to serve her with none knowing what it was she was truly after including Sƴn herself. Only when she discovered a particular spirit within the Lifestream would all finally be made clear to her.

Sƴns own life energies had been corrupted by that of the rs and changes had manifested outwardly transforming her into the first of a new breed of r without her knowing. She would find an uncorrupted spirit within this Lifestream and, by merging with it, completed her transformation. In an instant, she awoke to find herself surrounded by the bodies of those who chose to aid her and full recollection of all the memories deprived from her in the recent past. Her likeness was now that of a pink-skinned r and she emerged from the killing place screaming a battle cry to which the Hŋs responded. Where she had been ordered to learn and reveal ways to defeat the Hŋs, she would eventually join with them and it was she who led them against her own birth peoples. After they fell in defeat, the Fǣ would learn that their fate was not to be slaughtered; it was to co-mingle bloodlines with this tribe of Hŋs to birth offspring like Sƴn Sălrosa herself.
    Greater rkadia

The Hŋs are a savage race of conquerors who once ruled over what was called the Hŋŋish Empire. It had been shattered in war against a confederation of Saurian peoples ruled over by the Belodon. They would, in turn, be broken in war against the rkani and the Sƴn. Building their capital on the ruins of ancient Sălrosa, the kingdom of Sƴndăra would would begin waging wars with surrounding peoples. Ruled by Queen Sƴndăra, the firstborn daughter of Sƴn Sălrosa, the Sƴn were direct descendants of their patron goddess and ruled by a powerful elite called the Amor'fati. The rkani had arrived on Elderon upon the ascendance of Sƴn Sălrosa to claim a kingdom of her own among the Gods leaving her people to a fate of their own making. They were servants to the Etruscan God of Death rus and searching for new conquests after having helped him to overthrow his father.

The lands they conquered would be renamed rkadia for this reason and as their kingdom grew, their realm of influence would be given the name Greater rkadia. Queen Sƴndăra would invite rs of all races into her kingdom and rather than disparage those often who were outcasts or despised for their ugliness, she would embrace them. She would also embrace non-rs to increase their numbers further by interbreeding to create Half-r offspring. Finding weakness among many of those with deformities, Queen Sƴndăra ordered that r shamans be brought together for the purpose of creating a superior warrior from this inferior material. The result from their efforts would be the Ming Hur, a powerful breed of warriors which would vastly increase Queen Sƴndăras' power. Greater rkadia would prosper during these times and the Hŋs would eventually regain their prominance, but as fragmented kingdoms subject to Queen Sƴndăra.
    Sƴn & Amor'fati

The Sƴn are the children of the Hŋs and members of a Fǣ race called the Znă, the birth peoples of Sƴn Sălrosa. Unlike their namesake, the Sƴnwere born without naturally pointed ears. To remedy this, they would use metal piercings and a metal rod to pull their ears to a point. They would also adorn themselves with bone, gemstones, precious metals and extravegant cloth such as silk. They are seen as soft by other rs for this reason but they compensate for this by requiring their young to live harsh lives living among their more warlike kin. They provide their children an education and skill them in the art of war to assume the leadership positions expected from them. Through survival, they earn the right to live among the aristocracy and to enjoy luxuries that most rs hold little appreciation for. They are an attractive peoples retaining rish traits and pink-skin marking them as Half-r which made no difference among the rs.

From among the Sƴn emerged a taller, even more attractive peoples called the Amor'fati who ruled even above them. Unlike the Sƴn, some among the Amor'fati possess brown and even olive-green colored skin. They are among the most intelligent of all the rs naturally lending to intellectual pursuits where they put themselves above the ways of violence. They possess pointed ears like the F Sƴn Sălrosa descends from as well as the arrogance many among them possess towards the "lesser" races which has made rs their mortal enemies. The difference is that the Amor'fati may place themselves above their fellow rs, but they share their hatred for the F... because to the F, they're still as ugly as any r! In almost all ways, they are as cultured and intelligent as the F but maybe not as beautiful because they retain traits of rs. This reveals the inherent racism among their enemy which the F are too arrogant and proud to admit of themselves.
    Cyngşamā & Skallijaną

Among the rs, religion consists mostly of spiritualism and ancestor worship. Where they do believe in otherworldly forces, they turn to Şhamāns to intercede on their behalf. Among these, the most powerful caste are the Cyngşamā (Shaman Kings) so named because of their position moreso than actually being kings. These were beings with exceptional power in the ways of the supernatural and whose understanding of alchemy was superior to most. They would develop a creed to govern their activities and any of their number to break the creed would be banished to wander the Worlds of Shadow for the rest of their lives. Banished Cyngşamā would share their secrets and they would make their name feared as well as respected. Cyngşamā were healers whose greatest accomplishment among the rs would be giving birth to a powerful new race called the Ming Hur.

Where the Cyngşamā can come from any race of r, there is another group which was bred from among them called the Skallijaną, the Skull-Keepers of Kelh (the half remembered name of the r leader whose skull Sƴn Sălrosa used on her quest to becoming a Goddess). The Archmage of the Skallijaną possesses this skull and those of the highest order who were exposed to it would be honored to have their skulls passed on to successors. When one of these Skallijaną dies, their body is beheaded and their skull is merged with that of their ancestors through sorcery adding their knowledge to the object. Only twelve Skallijaną were allowed to possess these true skulls as they were also repositories for arcane and supernatural powers which their possessors are trained to control. But, others with less or no training would create their own to serve darker purposes and even kill to acquire the skulls they needed as they had no desire to die.

The earliest beginnings of the r start with Goblins and their hunger for smaller creatures. One such creature was a supernatural being called a Ʋǐla. These were nature spirits formed from eldritch energies as a small, winged Sprite which Goblins often caught on the tips of their long sticky tongues. The energies of these Sprites would be passed on to the Goblins eggs which are abandoned shortly after being laid. These spawn had a green glow with the resulting polliwogs being born poisonous and cannibalistic. Metamorphosizing into their mature form, the strong devoured the weak. The survivors then formed a pack and fought among themselves to establish rank with any that didn't survive being consumed by those that did. These resulting hybrids would be called the Alux because they were no longer seen as true Goblins, but neither were they the first of the True-rs either.

Although it might be conjectured that they were still part of the Goblin clade at this time, it was clear that they were evolving into something new. They were a malicious race little different than the Goblins they evolved from. But, they were far more powerful and unified by common goals. Offshoots of the Alux included splinter races like the Chaneque and Gremlins, creatures representing wind and fire elements where the Alux themselves represented the element of earth. Mixing their bloodline with the Nkk and the Eft representing the element of water growing stronger, taller and more savage. Calling themselves the Dreūząz, they could regenerate themselves and even breath or drink water through their skin. They would gain the name Hellbenders from the unusual trait that if slain and buried, their bodies excrete a jelly-like substance that completely regenerates them and they are reborn from within the soil with a more demonic appearance.
