    New England Nightmares (Vermont)

The history of the New England Nightmares begins with a team called the Syracuse Athletic Association. It played for ten years before winning what is considered the first true national championship in 1902 by defeating the Orange Athletic Club in the World Series of Football. Team owner Frank "Buck" O'Neill renamed his team as the All-Syracuse and eventually began play in the NYPFL. By 1920, the team was owned by John Wilkinson who was from one of the citys wealthiest families and sponsored by his partner Herbert H. Franklin of H.H. Franklin Manufacturing Company and the Franklin Automobile Company.

Now known as the Syracuse Stars because they played their games at Star Park Stadium they tentatively agreed to join the American Professional Football Conference but played only one game in 1920 and only three in the following 1921 APFA season as the Syracuse Pros. The team would revert to it's All-Syracuse identity as an Independent for the 1922 season and became known as the Pro All-Stars (fic) by 1925 after Herbert H. Franklin took over the team. Known as the Pro All-Stars (fic) to merge their various identities, the team joined the USA-AFL for two losing seasons.

The 1926 American Football League brought the Brooklyn Horsemen and New York Yankees to the state of New York playing against the NFL's Brooklyn Lions, New York Giants and Buffalo Rangers making this the most competitive football state in the nation. When the Horsemen collapsed and merged with the Lions, team owners Edmund Butler and Humbert J. Fugazy sold out to Herbert H. Franklin. Merging the two franchises, Franklin decided to rename his team the Syracuse Horsemen (fic) before eventually selling the team to wealthy philanthropist Richard Archbold in 1935.

While he didn't manage the team, those Archbold employed successfully bought out the assets of two teams in the second AFL called the Syracuse Braves in 1936 and Rochester Tigers in 1937. These were merged with the Horsemen creating a successful franchise which was sold in 1946 to the Central Vermont Railways. They would bring about an association between the team and the Headless Horseman via the fact that Richard Archbold grandfather, John D. Archbold, was buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New york.

After the team finally made the move to Burlington, VT becoming the Vermont Horsemen (fic), they first changed their identity to the New England Horsemen in 1991 and then the New England Nightmares because the team began adding elements from H. P. Lovecraft. The new logo was difficult to explain at first as it was designed to represent thorns and the legendary pumpking blasted out in the face of a demon. They would also represent the Horsemans head as a cephalopod (squid or octopi) to create their own variation on the Headless Horseman theme.

The first horse logo represents the Headless Horsemans horse and the second represents the steed ridden by the Second of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse... War!

To explain the original bizarre logo. It's supposed to represent a burned, exploded pumpkin with thorns, fire and a skull lol.
