    Thraikes

Thraikes are a breed of vampire originating on the World of Man from several lesser known vampire breeds. Their story begins when an evolutionary offshoot of humanity would arrive in these lands during the Old Stone Age that was proving to be an evolutionary dead end. To survive, they mixed their bloodlines with the last surviving descendants of the Tragos and then gradually with the Hopa, the Ginghu and then the Amata over a period of tens of thousands of years. From this would come the ancestors of the Thracian called the Thrak, a race of humanity still unique but increasingly being absorbed into modern humans. They were a red-haired, barrel-chested race with sloping foreheads, blue eyes and light, freckled skin known for their love of wine.

Members of this race would spread out across the World of Man where they comingled bloodlines with other red-haired peoples as this was a common hair color among the earliest humans in northern lands. This would also lead many of them to cross over into the Worlds of Shadow where they expanded and their populations exploded. Part of their survival included reaching out to the supernatural world around them and to find ways to control the natural order of the world around them. From time to time, a creature from the Worlds of Shadow discovered its way into the World of Man and, on one such occasion, a red-skinned monster had arrived which proved particularly hungry for human flesh.

    ----------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------

This was not an unknown occurrence to early humans but it was the first time these particular peoples had ever encountered such a beast until then unknown to them. To appease this angry god, they would leave sacrifices to it from domesticated animals. When this was not enough and their environment became hostile towards them to display the gods displeasure, they would give to him their own flesh and, from this, be rewarded. But then, the god discovered where they lived and began taking more than they could willingly give in human lives. It was finally decided that they must kill the gods earthly vessel in order to gain control more directly by giving the creatures head to their shaman. They had proven capable in killing such large beasts and had even shared the meat of the "big tusk" with their god before he began to devour them wantonly.

When they had successfully killed the beast, they would dine on its flesh and give its head to the shaman not understanding what was to follow. The creature had once belonged to a peoples within the Worlds of Shadow who lived on the World of Myrdread and it had been bred using sorcery. It had been the mount of a powerful sorcerer who had summoned forth Darkness, a force for evil which formed into the Anti-Life which would prove the ultimate source for decay and corruption. With the beasts head now held within her hands, the shaman would discover this evil too late within the beasts head and be transformed into the first of the Dipsioi (the thirsty dead).

    ----------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------

This Darkness would awaken an ancient spirit from within the World of Man since the Age of Dinosaurs and from it, give birth to the God of Blood; Éshr̥ Déiwo! While principally a god of death, within blood exists the essence and vitality of life so that Éshr̥ Déiwo could also be viewed as a god of healing and resurrection. Unfortunately, the means through which Éshr̥ Déiwo achieved this was to infect those affected by its power and to transform them into vampires. Whatever relationship the God of Blood possessed linking it to the Impaled God, who is the first of all vampires, is unknown. Éshr̥ Déiwo is not a sapient entity, but rather, it is only possessed of sentience itself lacking anything beyond base intellect and instincts.

Éshr̥ Déiwo would, however, manifest as a dragon-like creature called a Zmeu which possessed sapience and self-awareness. This lesser aspect of the God of Blood would serve as an avatar of it's power and its presence to the lesser beings which worshiped its creator. Those who worshiped it were a peoples called the Thrak who had survived where the rest of their kind had either become extinct or interbred with other races so as to remove themselves from this branch of the human species. The Thrak themselves had interbred with others to survive but their unique genetic traits had survived among their descendants even where they had assimilated into other races. They would preserve their beliefs and evolve in their way of thinking over the vast period their bloodline had existed upon the world of their origin.

    ----------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------

The Thrak had developed an intricate system of religious ideals and gods to whom they gave worship. But, their greatest achievement was to be secretive in their ways so that while their ethnicity and their race survived, it would do so through the advent of a secretive society and mystery cults. The Dipsioi would exploit this to conceal themselves and to peacefully exist alongside the Thrak feeding upon those who became outcasts or who had become diseased. They served a valued purpose and rather than being feared, they were often welcomed and protected while they slept during daylight hours. Those who killed people not condemned as outcasts would be treated like murderers and, often enough, it would be the other Dipsioi who sent hunters to punish them.

Yet, even for the outcasts, it was not always such a bad deal. While murderers would be drained dry in sacrifice to Éshr̥ Déiwo and to prevent them from being resurrected as vampires, others would be kept alive to be treated more like cattle being milked of their blood. Dipsioi might even convert undesirables into vampires since they could not procreate and any who were diseased or damaged could be made healthy and whole by this process. When humans first began to make wine from fruits and grapes that had fermented, they would associate it with blood and include it in their rituals. But, other vampire races existed who did not have such a cordial relationship with humans and were often more like rabid beasts than civil or even intellectual like the Dipsioi which increasingly made their presence known.

    ----------------------------------------------
    Becoming Thraikes
    ----------------------------------------------

The Thrak began to envision the Dipsioi more as warriors and came to know that their Mother Goddess Kybelehad given birth to the god of slaughter Sabazios and his twin Karabazmos, a god of death. Both would be depicted on horseback with defeated enemies impaled upon their spears and the heads of vampires strung from their waists. There would be a price to pay as other vampires began to feed upon the Thrak as they took advantage of their ability to mask themselves as Dipsioi to prey on human victims. The Thrak increasingly became hostile to all vampires which they sought protection against by creating laws against all who would feed on human blood. While supportive of such laws in the beginning, Dipsioi would learn their was a price to be paid for remaining passive in the face of voices advocating fear and intolerance.

This led to Dipsioi being slain as they had to feed on humans to survive and they began to wander away becoming more like other vampires taking what was not freely given. They would even interbreed with other vampires like the rare Izcacus, the Vrykolakas, the Blutsäuger, Incubi, the Strigoi, the Moroi and even the less vampiric Maenad who had been exposed to vampirism but used wine to preserve what had been done to them where the effect otherwise may have faded. It is from this mixing of the vampiric bloodlines that the Thraikes would be formed. Their name would be a play upon the Thrak from which the Dipsioi themselves had originated and, too which, they often found themselves still drawn to protect when needed.

    ----------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------

As the Thrak became more assimilated into modern humans and their name became passed on to the Thracians who were descended from them, the Thraikes would continue to prey upon them to replenish their numbers. They would also find ways to remain important to the Thracians having developed an understanding for why humans feared vampires and viewing them as children who feared the night. They viewed themselves as mature among the Thracians and that they had only matured as a result of their immortality so that they might envy the naivety of mortals not to know, nor to understand, the mysteries to which the Thraikes had discovered answers too. But, Thraikes were sapient like mortals so that they suffered from frailties like depression where the mysteries of existence took on greater meaning and purpose.

But, the Thraikes were also warriors who might appear among the Thracians at night to make war against the enemies of their children and to prey upon those peoples. They became interrelated with the ancient Mykēnai (Myceneans) where they began to claim the God of War Ares as their own and, by giving him the name Thrax, the Thracians adopted him as the legendary founder of their peoples. The Thraikes carried the story in a slightly different direction where Thrax was the son of Ares instead and where he became a living manifestation of Éshr̥ Déiwo to finally represent him as a sapient entity. They would identify him further with Sabazios and Karabazmos in how he would be represented so that the Thracians themselves began adopting him as Gios tou Ári (Γιος του Άρη, Son of Ares).

    ----------------------------------------------
    Defining Thraikes
    ----------------------------------------------

All vampire breeds possess racial traits unique to themselves just as human and animal species might possess. The only remaining traits of their original Thrak ancestors are a slightly sloping forehead, a pronounced ridge across the center of their skull (which their hair often conceals) and they typically have scarlet red hair even if their original hair color were different. Thraikes retain traits from different vampire breeds making them distinct yet sometimes easily confused with other vampire races. They fully absorbed the Dipsioi in the World of Man retaining traits like white skin easily burned by the Sun. Unlike other vampire races, Dipsioi could endure the Sun for a time as they would heal when removed from the Suns light but leave various shades of gray to black as scars from such burns. There is a racial divide among the Thraikes which is not, at first, apparent.

Those born of Thrak ancestry provide a genetic blueprint where their original human dna survives. But, it is transformed by darkblood from the various vampire breeds until becoming a mutated form of vampire dna unique to the Thraikes. As the impurities are burned away, the "pureblood" Thraikes change as they become both more powerful, and more demonic, in their true form. The first sign of this transformation is that the tips of their fingernails begin to glow and to burn as they tear through flesh. This transformation continues until they can reshape their hands into glowing daggers and finally form a "soulsword" from them. The bones and flesh of their hand literally snap and crack with a sickening sound as it becomes the hilt of the soulsword. Thraikes who are not of Thrak ancestry do not undergo this evolution and are treated as second class Thraikes who, at most, can only cause the tips of their fingernails to burn as they cut through the flesh of a victim.

    ----------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------

Thraikes also possess small, red spikes protruding from their spines because of the Dipsioi which could be retracted leaving only small red marks in a diamond pattern. From the Moroi, they gain their crimson horns and devilish forked tail each of which they can retract into their bodies to conceal them with only a red birthmark to reveal they are there. From the Vrykolakas, Thraikes have an acute sense of smell, glowing eyes and wolf-like ears being a hybrid of werewolves and vampires. It is from the Vrykolakas that they gain a weakness to the touch of silver which induces discomfort and while it cannot kill them, penetration of their flesh with silver causes intense pain. From the Izcacus, they inherited eight sharp, fang-like teeth that never retract; the ability to enter a shadow state and they gained a greater lust for vengeance when their tempers flare.

Like an Incubus, they possess various powers of seduction and are drawn more to those more in need of affection than to those who already possess it. The Blutsäuger provides them the ability to coil their tongue into a long, barbed extension that is extremely difficult to remove if they themselves do not remove it. This tongue can act like a whip and they prefer putting this tongue into a victims body to drink blood from them internally. From the Maenad, they gained the unique ability to satisfy their thirst from drinking wine if that win is mixed with human blood. While this may not seem important at first, it is a survival trait as they can store human blood with win and they do not have to drink blood direct from a victim as often. The Strigoi would have the greatest affect as they can become invisible with enough fresh blood from human prey in their system. They also gain the ability to create razor sharp owl-like talons and basic abilities to weave magick.

    ----------------------------------------------
    Within the Worlds of Shadow
    ----------------------------------------------

Thraikes are one of the more powerful breeds of vampire within the Worlds of Shadow. They are most prominant on the World of Sakkara where they are best known as being progenitors of the Imperial Reds. All of their abilities on the World of Man are greatly magnified in the Worlds of Shadow granting them super strength, greater speed and all their senses are enhanced including their abilities to perceive others with abilities similar to their own. Where they gain the ability to weave magick almost instinctively on the World of Man, that ability is far greater within the Worlds of Shadow although it takes time to learn to control this ability. While being shapeshifters, the forms they are most comfortable with are those of wolves and owls due to the various vampire breeds whose bloodlines are blended into their own.

Because the Thrak also exists within the Worlds of Shadow as one of the species of humanity that made their way here, the Thraikes seek them out. They desire them as mates and to dwell among them as they are more accepted on worlds where the supernatural is normal and ascendant. They also tend to be far more war-like and ruthless within the Worlds of Shadow making them highly sought after by all who make war. Thraikes have inherited an isolationist aspect to their lives where they watch and wonder about the lives of others that live in larger groups. They prefer small groups or to live alone so that they are often found living wherever they find comfort or security. While they tend to be more rural in nature when it comes to where they choose to live, they are eager to serve as mercenaries and to kill for a cause whether it be worthy; or unworthy to their sense of right and wrong.

Can the Thraikes breed? Do they seek out the Thrak for historic reasons, and/or to breed with, or create lifelong companions, turning them into Thraikes? Is this a mutually beneficial relationship in any way, or do the Thrak still regard them the same as other vampires, with fear and loathing? Maybe they benefit from their warrior status and are given protection?

As far as I know, they cannot breed but seek out descendants of the Thrak and transform them into vampires making them into Thraikes like themselves. They wouldn't necessarily only seek out the Thrak as potential Thraikes as they are vampires after all. It would be more of a racial preference possibly creating a situation where the preference for their own human bloodlines might cause those who are not born of these bloodlines to be viewed as inferiors where those born of Thrak descent are seen as purebloods.

Check the Defining Thraikes header as I rewrote an idea into it based on your question.

    transforming Thraik

Ah the hands! I had to redo this pic after reading that. This Thraik(ess) is in the middle of transformation. I'm not sure quite how this works, in that do the hands become permanently the soulsword, so they lose the use of their hands altogether? Do the hands, in this case, fuse together eventually? Or can they then summon the soulsword at will and use their hands 'normally' at other times? Anyway, this one's hands are transforming. Her strange head shape is disguised by her hairstyle, but the horns are visible. (She's sitting on her tail) Here's the link (if it works)
had to change this from photobucket as they now charge $400 a year or something so they replaced it with a horrible photobucket/p500 image! Let's see if this works:

Well, most depict vampires as clean other than maybe a bit of blood on the teeth where if you bite into a jugular vein, there's gonna be a mess
