    Ares, Allfather of Arius

    Gods & Goddesses

    ----------------------------------------------
    Gods of Arius

    ----------------------------------------------

Ares is an ancient god whose parents were the Celestial Bull Gu'anna and the Celestial Dog Ninkarra making of him a monstrous beast causing his mother immense pain. It would be said of him that his mother sensed more than one child within her while carrying him and that when she gave birth, was as shocked as any to find only one enormous child had come from her. His name was to have been Āryās and with his mother too weak to defend him, the Dogs of Urbat (dogs of death) surrounded him still trapped within the sac of blood in which he had formed. They would tear him free and pay with their lives as his first feast of flesh. He would stand revealed as a monstrous beast possessing the muscular body of a bull with the forelimbs, face, and teeth of a massive dog. His unique parentage had made him this way, a unique blending of predator and prey whose mother was a goddess of death and his father a god of virility and fertility.

Āryās would leave his mother unharmed because there was a sense that it was she to whom he owed his life and he owed her the same in return. He became a predator lacking for pity or remorse with even the gods learning to fear him and only the Erinu daring to accompany him as he developed a desire for companionship which they provided to him. As he developed both in mind and body, he seemed to remember his name as Ārēs which is what the Erinu came to call him as he evolved from a beast into the form of a man. Following where his scattered memories and instincts carried him, Ares rediscovered his parents and his identity but remained too bestial to claim his place as his fathers' firstborn son and heir. There remained something dark within Ares, a primal instinct called the anti-life which stirred his aggressive side to kill or be killed and to pursue his lusts even to kill for the sake of killing rather than the need of it.
    ----------------------------------------------
    Mistress Death

    ----------------------------------------------

Ares would be banished to a distant land where others had been sent because of their violence and otherwise unacceptable behavior. Many would choose to accompany him as they saw in Ares a leader and that exile represented new opportunities to liberate themselves... and opportunities to rule where now they were the ruled. For Ares, it would represent a war for his very soul as he had become more a god of death than a god of war which he felt destined to become. They would be thrown into battle immediately upon their arrival as the natives inhabitants who had arrived before him recognized the threat represented by the newcomers. They would conquer this world which they named Āryāvarta in his honor while adopting the name Āryāns for themselves after subduing this lesser realm. Absorbing the surviving native populations would vastly increase their numbers and where there had been great injustice and fear before, now there would at least be conformity.

From among the multitudes of the dead and dying, there came a woman more dead than living holding a sword which she had pulled from her own chest. Wherein there remained the faintest signs of life, others would rise to follow after her from this Plain of Desolation! Where those who followed Ares stood at the approach of this mass of people, their Lord would calmly walk out to meet them. He could sense the power within this woman and recognized that she had been reborn as an avatar for Mistress Death. She called herself Meilēts and would embrace Ares with a kiss only to find him distant and removed. Turning away from her, Mistress Death smiled as she knew his heart belonged to her and departed leaving gifts upon him that increased his power beyond his awareness. Bent and bowed before him, this army cried out as the pangs of their rebirth enraptured them and their bodies healed granting them a reprieve from death as twice-born.
    ----------------------------------------------
    Arianna, The High Queen

    ----------------------------------------------

Meilēts had been a warrior born, a woman trained and prepared for battle literally from the moment of her birth when she was first strapped to her mother's back. She was a woman marked by prophecy leading to her rise to become chief of her clan and then, to rule over several clans which fell before her. But the prophecy of her birth foretold that she was to be reborn as a goddess and that many would seek her death before this came to pass. When Ares arrived, word quickly spread that a powerful god had arrived to make war upon all the lands and Meilēts armed herself to meet him in battle. Showing no fear, Meilēts led her army into the conflict only to be overwhelmed and then felled by the sword of an Āryān before both collapsed after she rammed her own sword through his skull. Possessed by Mistress Death, her soul would experience everything which followed until Mistress Death departed from her and she arose to follow where Ares might lead her.

Meilēts knew that she was his to do with as he pleased as she was yet another "gift" given by Mistress Death to Ares. She would find herself abandoned into his harem where she evolved into a goddess of love who always knew that the eyes of Ares were upon her. She would meet his gaze with defiance and make battle with him until Ares bade her to take her place at his side before summoning a retinue of priests to formalize making her Arianna, High Queen of Āryāvarta and highest of all his administrators. Arianna was also a goddess, a gift to her from Mistress Death to better serve her future husband and to rule at his side. She also possessed some level of second-sight, the ability to foresee future events and to witness happenings at distant locations. Ares would also transform Arianna further so as to give her a more demonic appearance when angered so that she had dog-like attributes with the horns of a bull.
    ----------------------------------------------
    House of Ares

    ----------------------------------------------

Āryāvarta was split from a much larger land mass by a cataclysmic event in which a gigantic mountain of stone slammed into it. Ares had discovered the large outcropping of obsidian during his conquest of Āryāvarta and named it Areopagus (Ἄρειος Πάγος, aka Ares Rock) as it was to become the center of his kingdom. The enormous stone predated the birth of the universe itself and upon seeing his reflection mirrored from its surface, could see his fate would be to rule over this world. Arianna would cut his palace from Areopagus and shape it in ways befitting the High Kings nature. The name of these lands had been Samara and the High Queen saw no need to change it as she otherwise called his palace the House of Ares! Arianna then began work upon its massive walls rewarding those who served willingly with pleasures, but rewarding those who defied her by working them to death building the Walls of Samara.

Building these walls required mining as the building materials Arianna wanted lay at the lowest depths. The bedrock of Āryāvarta was made from once living stone as it had once been an ancient graveyard of once living materials formed billions of years before from the remains of plants, animals, and long forgotten gods. When the first layer of walls were lain, Arianna began building its second layer and other building projects to keep her peoples occupied. The House of Ares and Samara would then become known as Arius, a name destined to become known in place of Āryāvarta at the onset of the War of Gods. When the mysterious events leading up to this first became known to Ares, he found that his kingdom was now part of a much larger world unknown to him. Exploring this new world would lead to conflict as other gods were equally as mystified and found the Sons of Arius hungry for war aided by their Amazón sisters.

    ----------------------------------------------
    Weapons of War

    ----------------------------------------------

Of all the weapons given to Ares by Mistress Death, the enormous sword Psychophagus (Σαρκοφάγος, Soul Eater) would prove the most powerful. It had originally belonged to a destroyer of worlds who had butchered his way through an endless sea of souls and dedicated them in honor to Mistress Death. So destructive was the sword that Ares had to create a special sheath to contain it and to channel its power through his armor. The armor itself is a mix of technology from distant alien worlds and of sorcery designed to respond to the merest thought from Ares. His double-headed battle axe Vināśa (annihilation) is claimed to have split a planet in half although Arianna states that it was a "very small planet". The spear Kataigída (Thunderstrike) is shaped like a boar spear with two small swords to either side that can be transformed into a bow that hurls energy bolts. The Scylax is a stone slinger which hurls small stones with thunderous impact and his ornate dagger Atjaną, which was recovered from a god slain billions of years before, that can cut through anything.

Ares possesses a favorite weapon, a mace called Syntrívo̱n (crusher, shatterer) that can become obscenely large to be used like a hammer and project spikes from it similar to a morning star. Another favorite weapon is the Nékāmi, a long spiked strip of leather wrapped around his forearm and hand like a cestus. When he uses it, the gauntlet worn over it disappears revealing its power glowing and alight with fire. This fire can bring forth a dragon blade across his fist and even form into a short sword which can duplicate itself into his other hand. These twin swords sing as they slice through the air and cleave through souls of the dead... and the living bringing great agony to his opponent. Where the Nékāmi exists beneath his right gauntlet, within his left gauntlet is a diamond inlay which acts as a storage device for weapons. This includes his shield Vounóthraústēs (Mountain Breaker) which not only provides defensive properties, but causes earthquakes when slammed into solid objects.
    ----------------------------------------------
    The Ultimate Weapon

    The Art of War
    ----------------------------------------------

Among those souls left with Arianna by Mistress Death, there were a handful of resurrected souls from ancient times. Among the souls left to counsel Ares by Mistress Death, there existed one who taught him that every part of his body was a weapon to be exploited. Perfecting the ultimate weapon would require an army of mystics and seers to wage war on his behalf. Of primary concern would be the anti-life which often led him to periods of mindless and extreme violence. In every war, there are casualties and those he unleashed his wrath upon survived only because Arianna calmed Ares using the power of her love for him. He would instead transform those who displeased him into the Kwōneros (dog soldiers) and Unksrāsos (shadow demons) giving them a second life after suffering the end of their first at his hands. Controlling his mind, his body, and his soul would lead to the evolution of a creed called the Perístānom Dsā (religion of war) to better understand the purpose behind primal instincts that centered around his lust for battle.

The art of war is the eternal struggle between predator and prey where strategy gives an advantage, but fate still dictates survival. Ares would view himself as a force of nature being that he himself was a living manifestation of this struggle... the struggle for life! Death is only the inevitable consequence of living and all things must ultimately die including the gods themselves. Where he might be seen as a crimson hand holding the still beating heart of a slain enemy, the nobility of war centers on the necessity to eliminate the unfit, to strengthen the weak and to reward the strong virility. To prove himself worthy, Ares had to first transform himself into the ultimate weapon... to set aside his weapons and to survive without them. His trainers would give him knowledge of ancient fighting techniques from worlds already turned to dust and summoning other spirits to train him further before giving them new life to serve him permanently should they be worthy in his eyes.
    ----------------------------------------------
    Perístānom Dsā

    ----------------------------------------------

The Religion of War is a doctrine created by Ares as he freed himself from the anti-life and drew it from himself into Psychophagus. It would serve as a creed to those who were subject to him that evolved from a doctrine of battle to one of the spirit. Ares would discover that his mind was his greatest weapon of all as where his body and spirit might be broken, the power of his mind would always remain sharp and unyielding. If the body, mind, and spirit were not fit enough without the need for weapons; then Ares himself was not fit enough or deserving to possess them. This governing mentality would be passed on to his armies who would be trained first and foremost to use their bodies as weapons of war. Then, and only then would they be given a stick or a stone to use and to master. Once this was achieved, they progressed to weapons that were far more deadly and dangerous in their hands.

Those who fail to progress in one direction are then pushed in a new direction until some purpose is found for them as those without purpose lack meaning and are good only as slaves and fertilizer for flowers. Those who do not contribute to the well-being of others are parasites like thieves and beggars taking from predator and prey alike bringing weakness to all. In his reasoning of purpose, Ares sees those who survive into old age as proof of life's ability to endure while those with infirmities possess limitations to be overcome, to fight against and to conquer lending their strength to those deserving of it. Age carries with it the wisdom of survival to be taught to the young and the old are worthy of respect. There are also those who no longer wish to possess the gift of life and Ares answer to these weakest of the weak is to give their bodies to the more deserving who embrace life... and place the souls of the suicidal into those whose bodies are broken or dying.
    ----------------------------------------------
    War of Gods

    ----------------------------------------------

There would be no breaching the Walls of Samara even as the Abode of Gods became transformed and all the godly realms became merged as one. Gods who had not known of one another's existence now found enemies besieging them for which they were unawares. Those who had known of other godly realms had felt secure in knowing that each held firm to their own lands and might only, on occasion, venture to the lands of another. Each had been fragments of other worlds from the beginning of time until becoming worlds in their own right. But now, devastation and death lay everywhere. Gods and monsters new emerged from the chaos to make war upon one another, to survive and to conquer as a new age was dawning... the War of Gods had arrived! Arius was not unaffected by this war, but the "Sons of Arius" were more than ready for the wars to come and the kingdom of Ares would grow into a powerful empire crushed beneath their feet!

From the survivors, Ares would demand a heavy toll as he needed warriors to swell his ranks and they had to learn the ways of the Perístānom Dsā to determine who among them would go back to the lives they once knew. So too would come more powerful gods to humble themselves before Ares seeking refuge from the war and a means to redeem themselves. But, these gods would not stand before Ares as they would humble themselves before Arianna as she was the guiding force behind the building of a pantheon of gods devoting themselves to the House of Arius. Ares had been destined to rule over a pantheon of his own from the moment of his birth when, as first born, he was to have been his fathers heir. As Allfather of Arius, he would need powerful gods to whom he would rule over as his royal assemblage. Ares had been born a predator, a slayer of gods, a king and now... he was all things for which the gods of his lands would fall prostrate in reverence before him.
    ----------------------------------------------
    Ares Physical Appearance

    ----------------------------------------------

Ares skin color is gray and his hair is black. His body hair is thinnest upon his torso, upper legs and upper arms but is thicker on his lower legs and forearms. His fingers are covered with a layer of keratin on top but a softer layer of skin beneath which allows him a gentle touch while providing a bit of body armor for his fists. His true appearance is more like that of a minotaur with massive cloven feet, a muscular body, and horns to either side of his head. However, his face is more like that of a pit bull terrier with a mouthful of bone crushing teeth. Ares alters his appearance to be more human-like or conceals his face beneath masks and hoods with the one he most commonly wears being a silver and gold skull mask. With most of the Gods of Arius being more human in appearance, Ares seems to want to reflect those he rules over although most are aware of his true appearance.
    ----------------------------------------------
    Scions of Ares

    ----------------------------------------------

Ares would have more than a thousand wives at any given time and from their wombs would come his progeny. These he would begin intermarrying with other gods during the War of Gods and to important members of his military elite. From these would come the Scions of Ares, the inheritors of wealth and privilege who are descended from Ares himself... but are not his direct heirs nor will they retain their privileged positions if they prove disloyal or incompetent. Most would be lesser gods with a few being far more powerful than most. Heroes and villains alike as they would grow never having known a time when their peoples were not part of the House of Arius. Where his soldiers were expected to obey the Perístānom Dsā, those of royal blood would have more flexibility and forgiveness because of their royal blood... but only for as long as the Allfather allowed.
    ----------------------------------------------
    Children of Ares

    ----------------------------------------------

Each of the children sired by Ares would bear a variation of his name as their surname. This name was Areios (meaning; of Ares), a name first taken by Arianna and then by all his bloodline to distinguish them from those not born of it like all of his lesser wives and concubines. Arianna gained the name symbolically as she would be Godmother to all wherein exists her husbands' blood even as she ruled over them in her husbands' name.

    _______________________________________

    Ares Marnamai

The most infamous of his children was sired with a powerful goddess before the birth of this world to avenge her husbands infidelities. Hera would raise this son to be an instrument of vengeance allowing her husband Zeus to raise a scorpion in his midst never knowing the boy he called Marnamai (M̥άρναμαι) wasn't his. Yet, time softened her heart and she removed her spells from the boy revealing her betrayal. They would keep the secret so as to make her husband not look the fool not knowing her son had already learned and taken his birth fathers name. This Ares was known as a god of battle but viewed as a liar, a coward and as a "God of Manslaughter" easily overcome by bloodlust so as to endanger friend and foe alike.
    _______________________________________

    Dheunos
God of Death. Born with white skin that is so thin upon his face that it reveals the shape of the skull beneath it. His mother would sacrifice her own life to provide the ehtereal energies needed to grant her son a porcelain mask with the ability to take any shape he wished hoping he would use it to make himself beautiful. Instead, it would often take the form of a skull with a glowing jewel in the center of its forehead granting him the ability to drain the life force of mortals into himself. Twin brother of Néks

    _______________________________________

    Ariadne
Goddess of Fertility and Healing. Her name means utterly pure because she descends from a Goddess of Love who possessed long flowing white hair. Ariadne would be identical to her mother except that she would be cursed at puberty to enter a crysalis where she emerged months later with the lower body of an enormous white spider. She would become Mistress of the Labyrinth assuming the role as overseer of the maze created to entrap the unwelcome who might be a threat to Arius.
    _______________________________________

    Aria
Goddess of Mercy. She is a goddess whose song is soothing to the dying so that they die in peace rather than in agony. Amāyō
Goddess of Love. In the purest sense, Amāyō is a Goddess of Love and the tenderness it entails. She is symbolic of new motherhood and innocence rather than representing an older woman more experienced with childbirth and caregiving... a goddess representing innocence and wonder as well as the comfort needed to sooth whatever fears a young mother might feel.

There are no guarantees with war just as there are no guarantees with life except that to all things, there must come an end.
